If you’re like me, you might be feeling extra sleepy this week with the clocks moving forward from daylight savings time. But the extra hours of daylight and the beginning of spring being a few days away (3/20) is something to celebrate!

As the seasons change, it’s important to be mindful of how this impacts your yoga practice. Similar to how you may take a seasonal approach to your diet, incorporating certain poses into your routine will make you feel more grounded during seasonal shifts.

Spring Season

Spring represents a new beginning, most of the country is transitioning from cold temperatures to warmer weather. It’s often associated with creating opportunities to be more open and connecting with those and things in your surroundings. For most, this is an extremely energizing season but it can be a shock to the system if you don’t ease into it.

Your Spring Practice

Contrary to winter yoga, which is meant to be nurturing, grounding and calming, spring yoga should be stimulating, energizing, and expressive – just like the season! Find ways to add variation into your movement and focus on lengthening or expansion.

This is a great time to incorporate a flow series into your routine or perhaps look for opportunities to take classes outside or in a heated room. Also consider adding in backbends, heart opening poses, inversions like feet up the wall, and spinal twists.
